The ebullient forest conserved in the protected Biotope “Mario Dary Creek” (whose initiative was established in 1976) is, without a doubt, the more attractive natural site of the region. The park consists of 1,017 hectares of humid tropical vegetation, that provides the habitat to the national bird of Guatemala, the quetzal. It constitutes a small lung for Central America.
It is of mountainous land, very fraction, and it is located between the municipalities of Purulhá and Salamá in the department of Verapaz Loss. It enters the months of October January registers in the zone a constant dense drizzle denominated chipi-chipi, originating of the water evaporated in the lake of Izabal, the Golfete and the gulf of Honduras.
Pedestrian interpertativos footpaths exist moderately lofty that go into in the mountain. Footpath of the Ferns” (2 km) and “Footpath of Mosses” have been denominated “(4 km). A great variety of plants like ferns, mosses, fungi, gallitos, orchids and others can be observed. Birds like real, guardabarrancos quetzals, cayayas, whistle, toucans emerald; variety of insects, possibly mammalian small lizards and like howling squirrels, mice, pizotes and monkey.
It owns numerous cascades and brooks of pure and crystalline water. The Biotope counts with more than 50 species of trees, many of which reach to the 40 meters of height. It is possible to mention chipe or shut, in his different varieties, black, canche and target, eucalyptus, rubber, cypress and pine.
