Ceibal is a Mayan site, located to borders of the river the Passion, in the south of the Petén, that initiated its occupation in average Preclásico, around the 800 a. C., growing in importance until the 50 a. C.
Ceibal is recognized like a ceremonial center of first order. It was a strategic establishment from which the commercial and military interchange was controlled that became through river the Passion. Its past greatness can be appreciated thanks to a scale model, located at the beginning of the footpath, that allows to know how it was the large city before being left the voracity of the forest. The deposit lacks additional information at the disposal of the public visitor, reason why the scale model, at least, allows to imagine the hidden splendor under numerous knolls of the Park.
The unique recovered structures are the one that preside over the Central Place and a circular observatory, oldest in their type between the Mayans. Although main the attractiveness of Ceibal is not in its buildings, but in their magnificent wakes. Some present/display influences toltecas, like square glifos and ornaments of bone in the nose. The wakes of Ceibal present/display a working so refining that the American archeologist Sylvanus baptized them to Morley with the title of the Gallery of the Mayan Art.
The deposit was shortage in 1892 by Federico Arts that Saxtanquiqui called, native word for a typical bird of the region. However, today it must his gigantic name ceibas by powerful roots that give the welcome to the visitor and who accompanies to him throughout all the route.
