Ecuador was a well-known country little in Europe until the recent big wave of immigrants, who have approximated and waked up bonds between Ecuadorian and the European.
When thinking about the history of Ecuador as famous personages come to the mind as Pizarro or Orellana, that after a debilitating passage by the $andes, the Amazon discovers sailing the Napo river. But also the figure is to us very familiar from scientists like Charles Darwin and its Origin of the Species, extensive study on the fauna and flora of the Galápagos Islands, to more than 1000 km of the coast, or own Humboldt, that in its attempt to raise the Chimborazo, wanted to demonstrate the pre-eminence of this country like ceiling of the world due to its equinoccial position. It is indeed this fact, another one of the myths that characterize to the country, whose denomination “Half of the World” is repeated constantly.
But Ecuador still has today much more that to offer to the traveller: Its spine, the $andes, are protagonist of multiple tips and volcanos that speak quechua (Cotopaxi, Tungurahua, Chimborazo, Cotacachi, Capacurco Altar, Antisana, Rumiñahui, Cayambe, Zumaco, etc.); The extensive Amazonia, with its navigable rivers like Aguarico, Napo, Pastaza, Putumayo…, and its to a large extent still impenetrable tropical forest, lived by indigenous populations with little contact with our civilization like the Huaorani, constitutes the region with greater biodiversity of the planet; The irregular and most beautiful coast of the Pacific, that watches at the $andes after the West and the invisible Galápagos islands after the east; The dozen of islands that constitutes the archipelago of the Galápagos, a sanctuary for the lovers of the Nature, where penguins, iguanas, from Leon sailors, and hundreds of other animal species and plants inhabit unique ecosystems in the world.
We have to say that the diversity is total: geographic, ethnic, social and cultural. An extraordinarily diverse and cosy country. The traveller will observe a social and cultural mosaic. Without a doubt, it will also notice the bipolarity between the two provinces but powerful, Guayas, with its Guayaquil capital, commercial, vibrant, warms up and Pichincha with its capital Quito, bureaucratic, institutional, fries and colonial.
To its visitors this “small” country of 250.000 km2s, with 120.000 km2s of amazonian forest, 1.000 km of coast on the Pacific and about 12 million inhabitants without doubt is going to them to enchant.
