Otavalo is at the moment one of the more important tourist destinies of Ecuador. It has an enormous cultural wealth in which towns as the Kichwa Racially mixed Otavalo and the Target maintain their identity, fortified by myths, legend, customs and received millenarian traditions in inheritance of its ancestors. This cultural diversity is also conjugated with a variety of ecosystems that lock up a very important biological diversity and representative of the tropandina region, distributed between mountains, lagoons, rivers, broken and flowing, that seen from the local cosmovisión, have life and energy.
The Artisan fair of Otavalo, by its diversity of weaves and embroiderings expresses the character and intercultural wealth of its indigenous and racially mixed inhabitants. The greater fair is realized all the Saturdays, but it continues every day. Some of the most famous products are: woven carpets, ponchos, cloth, jerseys, strips, bracelets, purses, embroiderings, indigenous hats of cloth, necklaces, wood imitation jewelry, antiques and crafts.
The otavaleños
Important indigenous community that it has managed to maintain his own economic and social appearance is the one of Otavalo. It is composed by biases or indigenous communities of Agato, Stock-market, Peguche, Quinchuquí and Cotama. Also the sectors of the parish of Ilumán.
Its basic characteristics is its great initiative, with ambitious sense of the commerce and the business. Otavaleño is known him with the generic name of “Indian”. By its singular personality, foreign sociologists described to him like “native Aristocracy as America”.
Human group of extraordinary intelligence, has known to surpass itself by the decisive influence of the primary school. The school taught to him to read and to write and this it was sufficient so that he with his own forces makes the rest, that is to say, to control to the environment and his limitations. People of America and Europe come to Otavalo, to the Saturday fair, to know him, to talk with him, while it is useful selling his woven tuna to him, exclusive and loosely original.
Today she has initiated the conquest of the markets of Europe. For it, some years ago, a group of otavaleños (around fifteen), solved to move to Spain, where “the language is easier”. They were located in Madrid. They were dedicated to weave actively with cheap raw material, wool or nailon, and left to cross the streets. They drew attention by its clothing, that psychologically is part of the business, and thus “they seated place”. As he is customary to work communitarianly, that is to say, in group, in family, once they felt firm in the business, they reunited its money and they came to call to its relatives who had been in Otavalo. Now they are established in Madrid and they have come to take a step more: they have abierto a warehouse, that soon will be several, with the name of “Ecuador folklore”. This warehouse is located in one of the most centric avenues of Madrid. At the moment they are taking more manpower, because its next step will be Germany and soon Holland.
Another particularitity of the Indian otavaleño is the one of its honesty, because it knows that this requirement is part of a good business and the base of its prestige. But without a doubt, its greater honesty is the one of the fulfillment of its word.
At the time of Conquista, the Spaniards took advantage of their artisan technical ability and organized the remembered manufactures, with whose production they supplied fabrics to the Real Hearing of Quito, to the Virreynato of Lima and the Virreynato de Nueva Granada. In the wars of independence, Bolivar celebrated contracts of these fabrics for the uniforms, the blankets and other household for the army of liberation.
At the Republican time, several Governments fomented the national consumption of these famous weaves, that were continued exporting Peru, Colombia and other places. In short, the Indian otavaleño has maintained by hundreds of years the prestige of his good and admirable weaves like that, in international exhibitions like the one of Paris, at the beginning of century XX, they obtained gold medals. This professionalisation of the Indian otavaleño in the manufactured textile industry has caused that today it has, like no indigenous group of Ecuador, a great economic solution.
