Parati was founded on the S.XVII. It is today a charming colonial city, declared National Historical Monument in 1966. The traffic of motor vehicle has been prohibited by its narrow paved streets, keeping therefore the colonial atmosphere del that makes finery.
The isolation helped to keep intact the harmonious architectonic complex from the city, besides preserving the customs of its inhabitants.
“Paraty” comes from the name of a fish that was abundant in the zone. The warm waters of the bay made navigation safe of the small boats of the guayanas Indians. An important economic activity was the cane sugar production.
“Cachaça” (similar to the rum) of Paraty was considered one of the best ones of the country, and it was exported to other countries. It was so important that, in those times, the word “Paraty” was synonymous of “cachaça”.
For the tourists it is a pleasure to walk by the pretty streets of the historical center, and to explore the 65 islands and more than 300 beaches of the region. Near Paraty is “Great Ilha”, that was once colony of pirates, and is, nowadays, one of the more famous tourist points.
The island, surrounded by 106 beaches, green mountains and fantastic cascades, is a perfect place for trekking and the encamped one.
The boat trips around the bay of Angra do Kings, show a series of virgin beaches surrounded by an ebullient vegetation that gives name to the coast to which it belongs: “Green Coast”.
