Recommended time of visit: Of May to October, when the lagoons form.
They are dunes and more dunes combed by the fort wind caused by the movement of the tides. In spite of its desert aspect, Lençóis Maranhenses registers an annual pluviometric index of 1600mm, between January and June, that is the rainy station.
Of July to December it almost takes place the period of drought, in which tens of lagoons are dried, or. The miracle happens when, in rains, they become to fill the lagoons and returns the life. Fish, crustaceans and turtles reappear as if never they had gone away.
The dunes, that arrive at until the 20 meters, are of a sand blanquísima. The landscape changes to all moment, therefore never the image changes constantly.
Besides its “desert” part, Lençóis owns marshes, rivers (in which they sail voadeiras, types of boats of the place) and beaches. The “native ones” are fishermen who during the dry station raise their few heads of cattle for the sustenance.
The National Park Lençois Maranhenses is located in the coast of Maranhão, between the municipalities of Barreirinhas and Primeira Cross. The passage can be done by earth, or in airplane, a flight of 40 minutes from São Luis (the capital DES Been of Maranhão), course to Barreirinhas.
In Barreirinhas there are hotels, inns, restaurants and stores of crafts. In the mouth of the Preguiças river, the small town of Caburé is located, that also owns inns and restaurants. In the towns, where the typical food of the region can be tasted, it draws attention the affection of people.
