LOCATION: Located to 520 km of Quito, in the Province of Azuay, the National Area of Recreation of the Boxes extends on a surface of 28,800 Has. Integra the western mountain range of the $andes and is located in the province of the Azuay, 34 km to the West of the city of River basin, in the wagon River basin-Sayausí-Molleturo. One is between the 3,000 and 4,500 meters on the level of the sea.
The area of the Park is within the rural parishes of Sayausí, San Joaquin, Chaucha and Molleturo, of the corner River basin. The Ministry of incorporated it to the Atmosphere to the National System of Protected areas of Ecuador, since it owns excellent archaeological characteristics, values and exceptional qualities that are part of the national objectives of conservation and protection of the most valuable cultures.
FAUNA: The zone of the Boxes is the home of numerous birds of desert, between which they are the high earth toucans, mir them, the aquatic roosters, the condors, the hawks, the ducks of painted tip and the one of blue tip. The mammals of the desert are the wolf, yamala (Mazama rufina), anaz (Conepatus quitensis), guagur or porcupine, guatusas, the rabbits, the fox, gacela, puma, the bear, and the deer, among others. Between the birds they are the condor, the partridge, cuchipau, curiquinga, chaupau, mir it, the mount turkey hen… The main wealth of the National Park constitutes it to Boxes, without doubt, their lagoons, next to which several types live on communities. This hydric wealth is reflected in more than 232 lagoons than they give rise to the rivers Yanuncay and Tomebamba, that cross the city of River basin. The Tomebamba supplies the water that stops its purification require the city and its environs.
FLORA: The representative flora of the Boxes is grouped in forests that include trees and shrubs of regulating size (10 ms); short, that is vegetal species of up to five meters of height; prairies, copses that include ligneous plants; and pajonales with the predominant species that is the straw. The vegetation of the desert extends on a ground formed by the defrosting of glaciers. The most important species are quinua, valerian, the grass of desert, wild rosemary and the genciana. In the area of the Boxes is the unique redoubt of Forest Dimmed of the South wind (Mounted pluvial forest), located between the lagoons of Llaviuco and Taitachugo. Like species that grow in altitudes pure majors are rodales of quinua (Polylepis) or tree of paper, among others.
GEOLOGY: The valleys glaciers show the existence of one very great one that covered all the Andean zone superior to the 3,000 meters with height and whose ice caps followed in languages that reached to the holes. The part superior of these valleys is characterized by the great amount of lagoons of diverse sizes that have formed in irregularities worked by the ice on the rock. In the Boxes volcanic rocks of cretácica and pleistocénica age exist. In the zone, the geologic characteristics represent the periods Mesozoic and Quaternary.
AQUATIC ECOSYSTEMS: The National Park Boxes has great amount formation that regulate and conserve the hydric resources. The Oligotróficas lagoons can be mentioned, of deep waters, the Mesotróficas, with depths between the five and 10 meters; the Eutróficas, of little depth and discharge concentration of nutrients; the pools, of low depth; and completely full water ciénegas, bodies of saturated organic sediments, acid water, with vegetation like the juncáceas.
HYDROLOGY: The hydric resource of the Boxes, basically conforms the 230 lagoons of the zone, that give rise to the volumes of the rivers and is located between the 3,150 and 4,300 meters on the level of the sea, been becoming on alive rock depressions. The National Park Boxes is in the head of the hydrographic river basins of the rivers Cañar, Balao and Paule, this last of great importance and national meaning.
CLIMATE: A noticeable regularity does not exist, nevertheless, can settle down two periods: the summer, of August to January, with presence of strong winds, intense sun during the day and frosts during the nights, minimum temperature of 8ºC at night and 12-18ºC during the day; the winter, of February to July, with rainy or of drizzle, days with fog and snow-covered seasons, minimum temperature of -2ºC and principle of 8-10ºC.
ZONES OF INTEREST: The Toreadora lagoon, to be next to the main route of access, is the most concurred by the fans to the sport fishing. The services of bar and cafeteria constitute a complement of comfort for the tourists. The lagoons of Burines and Luspa also are very visited. The hill San Luis exerts of viewpoint. Avilahuayco is equally attractive like viewpoint or watchtower. The forests of Polylepis have much enchantment.
HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT: Apparently, the history of the region starts in the periods of Regional Development (500 500 years a.C to d.C.) and of Integration (500 years d.C to 1450 d.C.). At remote times, by the place it crossed the Way of the Inca who united to the Ciudad Real of the Pumapungo (Tomebamba), in River basin, with the Inn of Walls in Molleturo. The footpath crossed all the zone of the Boxes and from Walls it was conducted by spurs of the mountain range to arriving at the Coast.
The product interchange between River basin and the Coast became through Way of the Inca. In the sector of the Toreadora an important infrastructure was developed and in agreement with the needs of the Park, it was constructed biological and archaeological to the Center of Visitors, museums, bar, cafeteria, warehouses and offices for information,
In order to control the tourist flow and to realize the collection of the tariffs, they settled in Surocucho and Soldados, controls of entrance, registry of visitors and delivery of divulging material, maps and pamphlets.
FACILITIES: The hotel infrastructure of the city of River basin is equipped with hotels and inns with the comforts sufficient to take care of the requirements of lodging and feeding, to advisable prices. The transport service is efficient.
VISITORS AND ACCESSES: The displacements that they have as final destiny the Park of the Boxes can also be realized from the cities of Quito and Guayaquil by air and using the austral highways that connect the cities of Machala, Loja, Guayaquil and Riobamba.
SUGGESTIONS: The climate is cold-humid, and it requires clothes and raincoat, cap knitted cap, and rubber boots. In addition, it is important to fulfill the following recommendations:
- The incidence of ultraviolet rays is very great, reason why the skin with solar cream must be protected and use hat or cap. - Before to initiate long walks, a time of environment adjustment is advisable for the organism, and thus to avoid altitude sickness or altitude sickness that produces headache and mareos. - Due to the low temperatures of the water, one is due to avoid to swim in them. - The ascent activities must be realized with the advising and the company of expert people and with appropriate equipment for the activity. - He is preferable to take foods that can be preparations in the refuge of the Toreadora. - The pamphlets of information and maps of the Boxes are provided in the offices of the Ministry of the Atmosphere in the Azuay and the administration of STAGE.
