TRIPS TO CHILE: NATIONAL PARK LAGOON OF THE LAJA Geographic location: One is in the Andean premountain range of VIII the region, province of Bío Bío, to 37º 23' of 24 South latitude and 71º' west longitude.

Altitude: It varies between 976 and 2,979 ms
Climate: Of June to September there is rains and snow.
Temperatures: Annual the maximum temperature average in January (summer) is of 13,6ºC and the minim in July (winter) is of -0,3ºC.
Main attractive: - Antuco Volcano and lagoon of the Laja: they constitute a set of great beauty. In the North faldeo of the volcano ski tracks exist.
- Jumps of the Chilcas and the Eddy.
- Velluda Mountain range: it impresses by the majesty of his peaks and blizzards, to which it is possible to be acceded by excursion footpaths. From the stop a magnificent view of the valley, the river and the Laja lake is obtained.
- The Coigües: located in the Chanay sector, it presents/displays a natural viewpoint of Antuco volcano
What to do: Mountain-bike, trekking, andinismo, kayak e, even, ski and snowboard in winter season.
The landscape is of great beauty and very varied, had mainly to the geomorphology of the place, product of the successive eruptions of old Laja volcano; of its crater the present cone of Antuco volcano rises (2.985m), being still visible part of the old crater in the northeast zone of the volcano. The lava that lowered by slopes catched waters in the average course of the Laja river, giving origin to the lagoon of the same name, authentic water mirror. This neighbor of the imposing Velluda Mountain range is historically well-known, inasmuch as the “passage of Antuco” was used to deal diverse products from and towards Argentine Pampas.
The perfectly formed cone of Antuco volcano stands out between blue dark of the lagoon of the Laja and the snow-covered Velluda Mountain range. From the summit an interesting view of the lunar landscape created by the volcanic action is had. The apparent calm of the Antuco is deceptive since the volcano is not extinct; the experts wait for new lava eruptions every 100 or 150 years. Another interesting data of this volcano is that the ascent that carried out Poeppig, in 1829, considers the beginning of the andinismo in Chile.
In the National Park Lagoon of the Laja, exists a total of 36 km of the “Footpath of Chile”, network of circuits that will cross the country, in a total of 7,500 km, from now until the 2010. Throughout these 36 km pertaining to the Park, simple infrastructure like perrons, footbridges and bridges exists, whose objective is to facilitate the transit and to diminish the impacts on the environment.
As well, the route has viewpoints with beautiful panoramic views of the Park and the Valley of the Laja river. The footpath is signalized perfectly through all their route.
Flora: The vegetation characterizes itself by forests of cypresses of the mountain range. Next to this forest it is possible to observe numerous araucarias, maitenes of the Chubut, radales dwarfed and maihueinas.
Fauna: The most abundant fauna constitutes the birds, with great variety of species, between which they emphasize bandurria, the condor and the Andean gull. As far as the mammals, it is possible to appreciate vizcachas, vixens, pumas and some you scream.
In the National Park Lagoon of the Laja exists the possibility of renting cabins or of encamping in different sectors qualified for it; it even has restaurants and a mountain refuge.
He is ideal for who looks for peace and tranquility.
