The department of Zacapa is placed to the northwest of Guatemala in the call Eastern zone, to a distance of 146 km of the capital city.
The climate is warm, with an average temperature annual of 27 degrees Celsius, being the months of warmest March and April. The relative humidity is of approximately 66%. This one is the climate more adapted to enjoy the adventure tourism, especially in the northern mountains that offer a tropical landscape of fine wood trees. Zacapa also counts on propitious places to practice aquatic sports, as well as thermal and turicentros water baths with services of high quality.
One of main the attractiveness of the department of Zacapa is the “Museum of Paleontology, Archeology and Geology”, met at the moment like “Museum Karl Sapper”, located in the municipality of Estanzuela, that exhibits an extraordinary collection of prehistoric animal skeletons, a Mayan funeral camera and utensils used by the Mayan civilization, like objects of mud and jade. One of its main paleontological wealth is the complete bones of a mastodon; also it counts on the skeleton of a sluggish giant, the third party in his class in the world.
Several archaeological sites can be visited in the department, between which they emphasize Chamá, Charchá, Chichén, Chipoc, Chijolán and Old Pueblo.
On the other hand, it is not possible to be stopped visiting the Church of San Pedro Zacapa.
Zacapa is a place specialized in the production of cheeses and butter of excellent quality and counts on an ample variety of exquisite plates: quesadillas, pasties, doughnuts, bread of yolks and the flour tortillas. The symbolic plate of Zacapa is chicharrón with yucca, that consists of chicharrones, yucca, tortilla and room of tomato.
Besides the cheese production, the crafts of the municipality are based on the manufacture of pure and leather tannery.
